Based in Mirfield, the West Yorkshire Print Workshop is an open access printmaking facility.

We also run a regular programme of specialist printmaking courses and other related activities including arts and crafts activities and workshops for young people. We support artists and creative businesses by providing printmaking facilities, affordable studio spaces and exhibiting opportunities for members.

WYPW is a registered charity (no. 1010125) and a Regularly Funded Organisation of the Arts Council, England. We welcome any offers of voluntary assistance and sponsorship from the private and business sectors.

This new series of artists talks has been supported by the Kirklees Arts in the Neighbourhood scheme and Kirklees Locality Grants. Unless otherwise specified, talks are free to WYPW members and Kirklees residents aged 55 and over, or £5 for others.

LIADIN COOKE Thursday 17th JUNE 7pm to 8.30pm
UK-based Irish artist Liadin Cooke studied sculpture at NCAD, Dublin, and completed her MA at Goldsmith's College, London. She has exhibited widely both in the UK and abroad - solo exhibitions include shows at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the Henry Moore Institute and PS1, New York. In recent years, her practice has moved away from installation towards object making, resulting in more intimate work.
Liadin is currently showing her work holden at Huddersfield Art Gallery as part of 'Dialogues' (a series of shows inviting local artists to respond to works from the Kirklees collection). She will talk about the current exhibition and give an international perspective on making and exhibiting artwork.

JULIA CLEGG / IAN WRENCH Sunday 27th JUNE 2pm to 4pm
Ian Wrench and Julia Clegg, both established artist printmakers and members of the Inkers group, talk about their working practices and inspirations. Ian is a studio holder and board member at WYPW; Julia recently won the first Flourish Award for Excellence in Printmaking, and will be showing work at Huddersfield Art Gallery during June and July.

Popular artist Liam Spencer is best known for his distinctive urban landscapes of Manchester and Salford, one of which hangs in the permanent collection at City Art Gallery Manchester. He is an artist who sees something fresh and interesting in the everyday life of the city. Scenes include buildings, bridges, canals, motorways, industrial buildings, rooftops, traffic and the city at night. He was featured in a 30 minute BBC documentary A Picture of Manchester in 2005. Exhibiting at WYPW as part of the Urban exhibition, this talk will give an insight into the successful career of an artist who is established on the British art scene.

GETTING YOUR WORK OUT THERE: SAMANTHA BRYAN / HELAINA SHARPLEY Thursday 5th AUGUST 7pm to 8.30pm
Samantha Bryan's work is unique, quirky and intricately sculpted. She creates charming 'domesticated fairies' with machine-like contraptions, cleverly crafted from hand-dyed and stitched leather, paper-clay, wire, organic matter and found materials. Helaina Sharpley is a designer-maker producing elegant 2D and 3D wire sculptures/illustrations, with an obsession for everything related to tea and tea drinking
Both artists have shown their work widely at fairs and galleries throughout the UK and abroad. The talk will provide an insight into the dedication and energy required to maintain a successful career in the creative world.

ANDREW HAMBLETON Sunday 22nd AUGUST 2pm to 4pm
Andrew is a painter/printmaker whose current work exploits the immediacy of the monoprint, and establishes links between this technique and painting. He has worked in many print mediums, including etching and most recently woodcut, finding enjoyment in its direct and expressionistic qualities. Andrew teaches printmaking both in the classroom and in other environments, and exhibits his work widely both here and abroad. Andrews talk will give an overview of his career to date


HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH YOUR ARTWORK (session 1) - Sunday 5th SEPTEMBER 10am to 4pm
This practical session will show you how to get fantastic photographs from your artwork. Concentrating on two-dimensional pieces and small works of art, the session will look at lighting techniques and equipment options including how to successfully set up and use a light tent. With experienced artwork photographer Yvonne Grist.

HERITAGE TALKS Saturday & Sunday 11th/12th SEPTEMBER

A series of talks including, on Saturday, An Early History of Mirfield & The Robin Hood Connection; and on Sunday, The Brontes in Mirfield & Creating the Railings (with metalworker Julian Wadsworth) scheduled to coincide with Heritage weekend. Further details of times for specific talks will be published on our website soon.

LEARNING THROUGH DRAWING: Tony Chisholm Sunday 3rd October 2pm to 4pm
An illustrated talk by Tony Chisholm, retired Senior Lecturer in Art and Design Education (Bretton Hall College) on the development of childrens imagery and language through drawing with particular reference to contemporary drawing initiatives including the Campaign for Drawing and the Drawing Development Network.

Sci-Fi and Pop: Trafford Parsons Sunday 17th October 2pm to 4pm
Trafford Parsons loves to take inspiration from popular culture - be it 1970s icons in his Stormtrooper etchings, or monsters attacking London landmarks in his Gaia series of screen prints. Goldsmiths graduate Trafford will be exhibiting work as part of the Sci-Fi exhibition at WYPW, and in this talk will give an overview of his work to date.

How to photograph your artwork (session 2) Sunday 7th November 10am to 4pm
This practical session will explain the mysteries of taking that perfect image, concentrating on three- dimensional pieces and larger works of art. Attendees will learn new techniques and build their confidence in taking pictures which are well lit, well composed and which create a great impression. With experienced artwork photographer Yvonne Grist.

TALKING PRINTS: Dr John Hewitt Sunday 21st November 2pm to 4pm
**Limited places - please book early**
Dr John Hewitt returns to WYPW to deliver this insightful and popular talk, discussing his collection of prints by important modern masters (including work by Rego, Frink, Hoyland, Emin and Ackroyd). He is a Senior Lecturer at Manchester School of Art, where he recently completed a PhD on the subject of reportage drawing, and is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Art. He taught on the printmaking course at the RCA from 1983 until 2002, where he acquired many of the prints in his collection.
