Winner of the Hawthorn Print Supplies/Great Art Student Prize
During a period of unemployment in 2011 I decided to enrol on to a foundation course in art and design as a mature student. I live in Manchester and graduated from Manchester School of Art in 2016 where I studied Illustration with Animation BA (Hons). My work generally involves drawing, painting and printmaking. I first tried etching in 2012 during my time on the foundation course at Manchester College and have continued to work and experiment with this method. I enjoy the processes involved from the initial preparation of the plates to the final press onto paper.
My work with etching generally evolves from researching a given or self initiated brief, then sketching ideas on to paper and trying different compositional options before translating my sketches onto the plate. I have discovered that accidental marks can occur during the process and different stages of etching, which I find, can add a certain quality to the finished work that can’t be reproduced, or intentionally added, giving the work an often personal distinction. I find this both exciting and satisfying that the work can evolve within itself.
At my degree show I was awarded the Manchester Academy of Fine Art’s small print award 2016 and, as part of the award, will exhibit my work for the next three years at their annual show in Manchester.
This year I will progress on to MA study in Illustration at Manchester School of Art and continue to pursue my interest in printmaking and its application within my visual language.
