Kathryn Desforges is a visual artist and fine art printmaker based in Leeds. The works to be presented in this exhibition offer a glimpse of her current working practice, stemming from a year spent learning stone lithography- a fine art printmaking technique- at Leicester Print Workshop as ‘Post-Graduate Intern’. Exploring how representations of everyday environments manifest in print, Kathryn employs lithography as an extension of her drawing process – to remarkable effect.

Desforges   In this new body of work, Kathryn draws inspiration from time spent in an empty family home on the South coast during Summer 2013. Her documentation of the house’s interior through drawing, photography and film sparked ideas of memory, presence, temporality and physicality, and of capturing a moment. For her, these ideas are also reflected in the process of creating a lithograph. The act of processing a drawn image on a litho stone embeds the image within its surface – turning a transient moment into a permanent, physical image within the stone’s surface, which can be printed from repeatedly. This physical act of making is intrinsic in Kathryn’s work. “For me, the act of making enables presence of mind, and allows time for contemplation, experimentation, and the generation of new ideas.”  In this exhibition, the multifarious working methods used by Desforges to produce such exquisite lithographs will also be showcased. This includes sketch studies, video work and recent experimentations in bookmaking.

Kathryn Desforges is also Print Technician at West Yorkshire Print Workshop and will be hosting a talk about her practice on 10 July 2014 at 6pm. All are welcome to join us for this, as well as to the exhibition’s preview on 6 June 2014, from 6pm where their will be drinks available.
