Japanese Hand-Bound Journals - CREATE Saturday Workshop | Roger Grech

On this workshop you will be taught how to bind a Japanese bound book. The book block itself will be made of Tosa Washi, a Japanese paper, thin but very strong. This is held together primarily with ‘paper stitches’ then trimmed.

The covers are of Katazome-shi. This is a decorative paper printed by hand from blocks designed for printing Kimono fabric. These are stitched on with linen thread.

The course is suitable for beginners or experienced binders alike. Unlike many forms of binding Japanese binding can be done at home using simple household tools.

You can find out more about Roger on his blog: http://papercutbindery.blogspot.co.uk/
