1. BUILDING REFURB UPDATE
The extensive refurbishment of our lovely ol’ listed building continues to press on. We now have many brand-spanking new windows in the print room, plate-prep room, and some of our artist’s studios, all hand-crafted by our builder, David, to identically match what was originally designed to be in the gaps in the walls. The only difference being that we now have slightly thicker, much tougher glass to keep in the warmth which can occasionally be a little scarce in these parts!
The annex also got a little bit of love and attention last week with the installation of a brand-new heating system. This, combined with the new roof and extra insulation, should keep the present occupant, and the future occupants, nice and toasty warm through what looks as though it’s going to be a rather long winter.

2. CURRENT EXHIBITION: Flourish Award 2012
It’s that time of year again when West Yorkshire Print Workshop exhibits selected entrants work for the Flourish Award. The award was established in 2009 to celebrate and promote excellence in printmaking from its members.
This year we decided to enlarge the scope of the award to include non-members’ work from across the Yorkshire region. This is an exciting development and allows WYPW to champion and showcase the best printmaking from practitioners across Yorkshire. It provides Yorkshire artists and printmakers the opportunity to exhibit their work at the WYPW Gallery and go on to plan their own solo print exhibition at Huddersfield Art Gallery in 2013 as part of the prizes awarded to the winning printmaker.
This year we had a high level of entrants and 14 artist/printmakers made it through to the exhibition stage.
Prizes for the winners include solo exhibitions at Huddersfield Art Gallery and West Yorkshire Print Workshop in 2013, and discounted usage of the print facilities at West Yorkshire Print Workshop in Mirfield.
There will be a private view and prize-giving evening tonight (Thurs 1st) from 7 - 8:30pm which is open to everyone. You can also take part in the People’s Choice Award by voting for your favourite of the exhibited printmakers when you come and see the exhibition.
The exhibition is open from now until Saturday 24th November.

3. CALL FOR ENTRIES: PRESENT EXHIBITION
Our next exhibition after Flourish will be 'PRESENT' which opens on the 29th November and runs until 22nd December. It focuses on showcasing a wide range of contemporary art and craft from both members and non-members.
The work on display will all be for sale to encourage purchases for Christmas. If you would like to be part of the exhibition please send images of your most recent work to patrick@wypw.org.

Collagraph and Carborundum Printing with Dawn Brooks **NEW START DATE**
Collagraph printing is a very exciting way of making a print. Almost any material with texture can be collaged onto the printing plate such as paint, fabric and leaves. Carborundum is a grit which is applied to the plate to create rich tones and textures. The resulting impression is that of embossing as well as printing.
Dawn Brooks is a printmaker based at Crescent Arts in Scarborough. Her monochrome prints are stark, intimate and expressive, combining drypoint etching, collagraph and drawing processes. Drawings are a starting point for her printing plates, which are created as a painter might use a canvas, in the sense that the construction of the image is process led - instinctively reacting to marks as they are made.
You can find out more about the tutor here.
Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th December 2012
11am - 5pm

7. WYPW ARTIST/PRINTMAKER PARTICIPATION PROJECT
We are pleased to announce that our 'Pass the Book' project has started. The first person to make their mark in the book was Kate Desforges and you can see Kate's progress by following the Pass the Book Facebook page.
The artist who is currently working in the book is Jenny Thomas. We have approximately 80 artists taking part in 'Pass the Book' which is an amazing response, if you are interested in joining the project, please get in touch. The 'Pass the Book' project extends an invitation to artists/printmakers/writers and creative thinkers and doers to contribute to our book. If you have your pen poised and want to take part simply email patrick@wypw.org.
The idea behind the book is to celebrate good old fashioned 'analogue' hands on creativity! We live in a digital age where nearly everything is created remotely in a flat digital world whether it be screen or tablet. Here at West Yorkshire Print Workshop we celebrate hands on creativity everyday through our creative screen printing, etching and letterpress courses. For well over 25 years West Yorkshire Print Workshop has been getting down and dirty (literally) with the wonders of good old fashioned messy ink, paper and creativity, and now it's your turn!

8. KNIT-TOGETHER
WYPW Craft Participation Project – Knitters Needed!
We are looking to collaborate with individuals, local community groups and worldwide knitting and crochet networks to create a knitted installation to be displayed on our staircase gallery and on the WYPW building itself.
The project explores the notion of community and creatively working together, whether this be in the same room or across the globe. We will be asking for people to supply individual panels of knitting approx. 12" x 12" which can be stitched together with other panels to create wall coverings for the staircase gallery and also be installed on the exterior of the building. If you are interested or would like to find out more information, please get in touch by emailing patrick@wypw.org.

9.KNITTED POPPY APPEAL
In other craft-related news, WYPW’s Saturday morning Craft Club hit the headlines this week with Carol Rodwell’s crocheted poppy project so far raising an estimated £400 for The Royal British Legion.
Carol learnt to how to crotchet flowers whilst attending WYPW’s Craft Club and built on her skills at home which lead her to start the project.
WYPW’s Craft Club will run every other Saturday and Carol will be here again selling her unique poppies and raising money on Saturday 10th November from 11am - 1pm.

10. 20:20 PRINT EXCHANGE 2012
Last week was the deadline for our members to hand in their work for the 20:20 print exchange and it was great to see them all together and the diversity of the work – including screen prints, collagraphs, etchings, drypoints and solar plate prints by 20 of our members.
We sent them all off on Saturday, and all those who contributed should have their boxes of prints by the end of November.
We will be exhibiting the contents of our workshop’s boxes – 40 prints in total, all of which will be for sale at a very reasonable price – during our ‘Present’ exhibition, along with a wide range of jewellery, photography, glass, textiles and rugs from contemporary art and craft practitioners. The exhibition runs from 29th November until 22nd December.
