Part 1 - What's happening at WYPW...

1. STAFF CHANGES AT WYPW

As many of you know Pam Lonsdale has now left WYPW for pastures new, and we wish Pam well in her new ventures as Event Coordinator at Saltaire Inspired.

The good news is we have appointed Julie Gaskell-Johnson as the new Centre Manager and she joined the team here in Mirfield last week.  Julie has a background in the arts doing things as diverse as organising community events such as Christmas light switch ons and outdoor music events through to managing the Cooper Gallery in Barnsley. She has just completed her Master’s in Business Administration at the University of Huddersfield and is looking forward to taking WYPW into its next phase.

3. CHRISTMAS 'PRESENT' EXHIBITION

Are you looking for that unique Christmas 'PRESENT' for friends and family this year?

Then make sure you visit our 'PRESENT' exhibition at West Yorkshire Print Workshop. We have a wide range of contemporary art and craft from both members and non-members. This year we have a special emphasis on affordable prints, we are showing a large selection of original prints produced for this year's 20:20 competition (more information about 20:20 can be found here) all 20:20 prints are £20, a great price to own an original handmade print! We also have prints available by Moira McTague, Ian Wrench, Andrew Hambleton and our very own Kate Desforges.

The exhibition runs until Saturday 22nd December.

4. ADULT COURSES

New dates have been added to our ever-popular ‘Beginner’s Screen Printing’ and ‘Introduction to Printmaking’ courses as well as the recently introduced ‘Introduction to Letterpress’ course. Click the links to browse the new dates and have a gander at all the other fascinating courses on offer.

Remember, you can purchase a gift certificate for a course or membership to WYPW as a Christmas present for the creative people in your life. Email info@wypw.org to find out more.

And if you’re still on the lookout for something creative and new to do this weekend, then there are a couple of places remaining on our Collagraph and Carborundum course with Dawn Brooks.

While you’re at it, have a look at this little video from our recent ‘Letterpress Christmas Cards’ course.

5. SATURDAY CRAFT CLUB GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

Craft Club is our informal friendly group aimed at beginner knitters, crocheters, yarn bombers, pom pommers and anyone else who wants to share their craft knowledge in a friendly setting. So far this year the group through the activity of Carol Rodwell raised £1000 making and selling knitted Poppies for Remembrance Day. The group also created hand-made bunting decorations using fabric supplied by Skopos Mill (see image above).

Do you have any skills that you could share? Or would you like the answer to a particular crafty problem, then get in touch with patrick@wypw.org or pop in and say hello!

The craft club is taking a break for Christmas but is back on the 12th January, where Rag Rugging will be the main activity. The Craft Club will then return to its fortnightly time slots with the next being on the 26th January.

6. PASS THE BOOK GOES INTERNATIONAL

Great levels of interest - 100 people taking part!
We are pleased to announce that our Pass the Book project has now got 100 artists signed up to take part. We have international reach with artists taking part in Paris and Australia.

The idea behind the book is to celebrate good old fashioned analogue hands-on creativity! We live in a digital age where nearly everything is created remotely in a flat digital world whether it be screen or tablet. Here at West Yorkshire Print Workshop we celebrate hands on creativity everyday through our creative screen printing, etching and letterpress courses. For well over 25 years West Yorkshire Print Workshop has been getting down and dirty (literally) with the wonders of good old fashioned messy ink, paper and creativity, and now it’s your turn!

Follow the project on our Facebook page - www.facebook.com/WYPWPasstheBook.

7. KNITTERS NEEDED

Knit-together
We are looking to collaborate with individuals, local community groups and worldwide knitting and crochet networks to create a knitted installation to be displayed on our staircase gallery and on the WYPW building itself.

The project explores the notion of community and creatively working together, whether this be in the same room or across the globe. We will be asking for people to supply individual panels of knitting approx. 12 x 12inches which can be stitched together with other panels to create wall coverings for the staircase gallery and also be installed on the exterior of the building. If you are interested or would like to find out more information, please get in touch by emailing patrick@wypw.org.

8. CHRISTMAS CHARITY PRINT AUCTION

With Christmas fast approaching we’ve decided to run another one of our Charity Auctions where we’ll be selling prints collected throughout the 20:20 Print Exchange to raise money to maintain the facilities here at WYPW. A worthy cause I’m sure you’ll agree!

It’s the perfect opportunity to get your hands on some last minute Christmas presents as there’ll be a wide variety of stunning prints on offer. Keep an eye on your inboxes as well as our Facebook and Twitter feeds for details of when the auction will begin and end as it will be rather soon!

9. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

As this is our final bulletin of the year, everyone here at West Yorkshire Print Workshop would like to say a Merry Christmas to all our lovely members and readers. We’ve seen some fantastic work produced over the last twelve months and have been fortunate to host and participate in many wonderful and creative events.

Here’s looking forward to more of the same over the next twelve months.

See you next year!

B.
WYSING ARTS CENTRE RESIDENCY

Wysing Arts Centre invites proposals from artists for our 2013 residency programme; ‘Convention T’
Wysing have experimented with different programmatic structures in order to support artists to make new work. We are seeking proposals from artists who are interested in applying structures or systems to generate new work, readings and perspectives. Our 2013 residencies will be offered to eight artists who will be able to work from studios at Wysing during two periods: spring and autumn 2013.  Four of these artists will be invited, and four recruited through this Open Call.
