5. KIRKLEES CREATIVE SUMMIT
Join us at the Summit to find out how you can play your part in the future of creativity in Kirklees
An essential conference for all those involved in the arts and creative economy in
Kirklees, and for services and agencies which want to find out what artists, the arts
and creative businesses can do for them.
Cost £5 - towards refreshments and buffet
Stalls and displays; networking, guest speakers; workshops to take the Creative
Kirklees strategy forward; later sessions for amateur and voluntary organisations -
All welcome from 1.30pm onwards
For more information and to book places and stalls visit: www.kirklees.gov.uk/creativesummit

Call for Session Facilitators:
At the Summit, there will be five hour-long workshops each happening once, and each centred around one of the Five Ambitions of the Creative Kirklees strategy.
(A sixth Workshop from/about The Charity Bank - is self-contained)
Each workshop will be started by a 10 15 minute (max) think-piece, presented by a speaker from the relevant sector but outside the Council.
We wont know the numbers per workshop until all bookings for the Summit are in, but may - through a ranked preference system try and even up the numbers.
The physical limit for Summit attendance given the way we are using the Creative Arts Building - is 150 people. If there is maximum attendance, then workshops could average 25 people - but probably less.
An extract from the presenters brief reads:
Content of the Workshop presentations (think-pieces)
This will initially be determined by the Ambition that your workshop is focussing on. We may have asked for particular angles or themes, and/or you may want to follow up on particular themes and issues which occur to you.
The intention is that the presentation sparks debate, so provocation welcome To elicit debate and discussion in and beyond the workshops and the Summit .
Concluding key questions or a summary that can then be picked up in the Workshop discussion could also be useful.
Attached to this email is the Summit outline programme.
We are looking for a facilitator for each workshop hence this approach to you.
The task of facilitators therefore is to:
Liaise with your workshop presenter well before the Summit (on 15th September) to clarify what sort of facilitation would be most suitable, given the subject and format of their think piece presentation. (e.g. conventional chairing; less verbal, more visual recording of responses; small group and/or larger group work, etc)
Plan, prepare and agree the facilitation process, as appropriate.
Prepare or source any materials or equipment you will need (This Team can provide obvious stationery items. We would need to know what you would require. Presentation equipment and screens are built into the workshop rooms.
If you are interested in facilitating a workshop, as above, for an inclusive fee of £150, please send me an email indicating:
1. Which Ambition Workshop or Workshops if more than one - you would be interested in facilitating.
2. Examples of a few of the techniques that you could use to facilitate the workshop discussion.
3. Indicate a process you would use so that the Workshop concludes with a summary of key points (each workshop will also have a scribe, whose notes etc will contribute to a full Summit report to be circulated after the event).
4. What periods of time between now and 15th Sept your will not be available for any phone or email contact because your are away or on holiday (this is so that if you are selected well know when and how you can be communicated with over the rest of the summer)
5. If the fee is acceptable (though with a limited and tight budget, we cant offer more)
Please respond to me by the end of Monday 23rd August.
If you have any queries meanwhile, please contact me jon.rust@kirklees.gov.uk.

6. WYPW AGM DATE AND INVITATION TO JOIN THE BOARD

This year the AGM will be held on September 13th, 7.30pm onwards. It would be great to see a good turnout from our membership, and invitations will be sent out in the very near future.

All posts on the board are up for re-election and we would welcome new faces and any new skills and experience that can be brought to the board.

The following advertisement is being publicised to encourage new interest particularly in the position of Chair at WYPW:

West Yorkshire Print Workshop (WYPW) is an arts charity based in Mirfield, close to the M62 (junction 25) and Huddersfield town centre - and equidistant between Leeds, Wakefield and Bradford. We are currently seeking to appoint a new Chair to our Management Board.
WYPW is a membership-based organisation situated in Grade II listed building, leased from the Wakefield Diocesan Board of Education on a long term full maintenance and repair lease. The building has operated as an arts centre and gallery for the past 25 years. The organisation has developed a reputation for delivering a regular programme of high quality art and crafts activities, whilst also providing key facilities for professional artists from across the sub-region. It is a regularly Funded Organisation (RFO) of the Arts Council England, and a Creative Partner of Kirklees Council.
We are looking for someone who is able to continue the good work started by the current Chair and Management Board, whilst also overseeing the development of new strands of activity. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in the visual arts and will be able to demonstrate a wide range of relevant experience. The Chair will have responsibility (along with other Board Members) for steering the organisation, managing staff and ensuring that the organisation is well prepared for current and future challenges. Please note that this is a voluntary unpaid role.
We encourage expressions of interest from people from an ethnic background or people with a disability who are currently under-represented on our board.
Further information about our organisation and activities can be found on our website, www.wypw.org. For an informal chat about the role, please contact Pat Crowther (Chair) on 01924 497646.

7. KATE DESFORGES EXHIBITIONS/PROJECTS UPDATE

An update from our Technician, Kate, on various projects and exhibitions that she is involved with:
Hi All

It's been a while since my last update, and there's quite a lot of news...

Firstly, the flickbook project for which I was commissioned by I Love West Leeds Festival went swimmingly. They all looked great hanging in their own little shed on festival day, and lots were created by imaginative people at the accompanying workshop...http://www.ilovewestleeds.co.uk/flickbooks.htm
Secondly, I have had work accepted into a few exhibitions coming up in the next few months:2010 Open Print Competition in Cornwall, 'Showing the most innovative methods in Printmaking processes from all over the world'. Opening reception 6-8pm, Tuesday 5th October 2010 at Open Space Galleries, 40 Lower Market St, Penryn, TR10 8BH, Cornwall. I will be trying my best to attend...http://www.openspacegalleries.com

Cork Street Open Exhibition 2010, London, (see attached flyer). Although it is not yet definite that my print, 'Sightings', will be hung, I will be attending the artist reception on August 11th 7 - 9pm, at The Gallery in Cork Street, 28 Cork Street, London, W1S 3NG. There is also a ticketed private view on August 4th from 7 - 9pm. Tickets can be purchased from the website...www.corkstreetopenexhibition.com

Gallery 49, Bridlington. An exhibition of members' work from West Yorkshire Print Workshop. The show has now been extended for an extra week until 8th August, so there is still time to go and have a look, especially as it runs alongside a fantastic exhibition of David Hockney prints...http://www.galleryforty-nine.com/index.html

Lastly, I have a piece of work in the Artists Open Show 2010, Leeds Art Gallery for the 2nd year running, so do come along to the opening on Sunday 8th August 12 - 1pm...always a good excuse for a glass of wine on a Sunday afternoon

Thanks for taking the time to read and hope to see you soon.

WYPW CHRISTMAS CARDS NEEDED

An artist co-operative Christmas Card Stall is to be based at Wakefield Museum for Wakefield ArtWalk on November 25th. As a key partner in the ArtWalk programme, the museum currently provides an artist led session attracting around 100 visitors per evening. As well as these visitors, the stall will be used to attract new audiences to the museums such as local business people and Christmas shoppers whilst increasing awareness and encouraging support of local artists.

WYPW members who would like to sell their work on the stall should email Mark at wypwfunding@yahoo.co.uk to express their interest

THE WILD PANSY PRESS BRITISH BOOK OF VIOLENCE - CALL FOR CONTRIBUTORS

Britain has a long and distinguished history of violence - in this we are like any other nation; however, it has been argued that we inflict it on ourselves and on others with particular enthusiasm and efficiency.

The way this history is manifested is specific, violence being part of our national identity. The British brand of violence informs our art, our humour our politics, our sexual habits and our social identities. Its present threat underwrites political and social hegemonies and haunts our dreams; we laugh with relief at our escape when it is inflicted on someone else; we turn it inwards on ourselves in spectacular cycles of addiction, abuse and self-hatred. Our artists and writers inflict violence on materials, ideas and language (and sometimes on themselves) as an intrinsic part of the creative process. What are the particular forms in which our national history of violence is manifested through language and culture?

WPP invites artists and writers initial outline responses to the idea of British Violence - historical, political, sexual, ritual, comical, subliminal, practical, institutional... we would particularly welcome material from non-british contributors either resident or offering a view from outside.

WPP will work with the selected contributors to produce work to be included in the second of an ongoing series of themed group publications in which the editors at WPP act as curators and animateurs to develop publications which extend and confound the usual notions of the book.

We are looking for: visuals of all kinds, instructional projects, games, short texts of any kind (notional maximum 2000 words) works of fiction, fact or any combination of the two. We need to receive proposals and expressions of interest by September 30th 2010, with a view to completion by December 30th and publication in early 2011.

See message below from Ollie Scarth:

Hi Kate,
Thanks for talking with me today here is some information
The ITV series is called May The Best House Win and will feature interesting homes, real passion projects and properties that are distinctive and express their owners personality, whether its people who live in interesting conversions, fascinating period properties, or who have filled their home with fascinating objects or artifacts, or decorated in a particular theme. Anything goes - so long as the homeowners really love their home.

In each episode we will feature 4 very different houses in a particular area. We will ask the homeowners to visit each of the other houses and award them marks out of ten. The winning homeowner wins £1000. Its a really good fun show designed to bring together people with different tastes and different properties to discuss and debate their own ideas of what makes a home.
