WYPW E-BULLETIN NO.6

Welcome to the WYPW e-bulletin. This time we feature a stunning new exhibition in our gallery, plus opportunities to get involved here at the workshop and further afield - design a Christmas window for Oriel Mostyn, run a workshop at Wakefield Museum or get some professional development help at the Art House. Alternatively, you could apply for a £10k commission at the House of Lords

A quick note about our print facilities: This week we had printmaking engineers Rochat in to service our large etching press which is now running much more smoothly having been totally taken apart, cleaned and re-greased. Kippax have also serviced the 2 print-down beds and the exposure unit in the screen room, re-setting the frames and replacing both the on/off switch and the sealing strip around the vacuum unit. A busy week but hopefully your print sessions will now run even more smoothly

6. ARTIST OPPORTUNITIES AT WAKEFIELD MUSEUM

Big Draw 2010
Wakefield Museum is taking part in the national BIG DRAW event Saturday 9th October. We are looking for an artist to facilitate a session on the Saturday. The theme for this year is Make your Mark on the Future with suggested topics including architecture, habitats and habitation, fashion, ecology or recycling.
Using either the collection or the museum building for inspiration, the activity should be family friendly and also suitable for adults, fun and engaging with an opportunity for participants to utilise and improve on their drawing skills.

Please get in touch with a brief proposal including some pictures of previous work before Monday 23rd August to aholland@wakefield.gov.uk

November ArtWalk
We are trying something a little bit different for the November date, a sort of Artist co-operative Christmas card Stall. The idea is to support local artists by offering space in the museum and a mulled wine infused festive ArtWalk audience for the sale of Christmas cards or any other small gifty things. Theres been interest from WYPW and I am just getting round to sounding out other groups such as yourself. The space in the museum would be free and we have a small budget for marketing with the artists collectively agreeing on an arrangement for staffing the stall: the museum would not be responsible for any money etc.

If you are interested in taking part or finding out some more about this, please send me an email aholland@wakefield.gov.uk

ArtWalk 2011
Well be looking for artists to deliver sessions in Wakefield Museum for the 2011 programme of ArtWalks. If anybody would be interested in delivering a session please take a look at the Wakefield Museum Website for updates about temporary exhibitions and pop in to take a look at our permanent collection for some inspiration.
This event is ongoing so please get in touch with a brief proposal if youd like to be involved.

7. MOSTYN CHRISTMAS WINDOW - CALLING ALL CREATIVES

Waless leading contemporary art gallery is offering an opportunity to create the first Christmas window display for the Mostyns fabulous new shop.
We are inviting proposals for a Christmas window display giving artists/designers/makers the
opportunity to dress the larger of our double fronted art noveau style windows. This is a unique opportunity for visibility for your work in a fantastic space.
The gallery reopened on the 22 May following a £5.1m refurbishment and expansion, which has greatly enhanced and expanded its facilities. The result is an outstanding space offering four main galleries and two smaller exhibition spaces along with excellent new educational facilities, Caf Lux, named to reflect the quality of light that was always a feature of the old Mostyn and a larger shop with street frontage and a floor area of just over 100 square meters.
The retail space at the Mostyn presents a carefully selected range of hand-made products, from sculptural ceramics, brightly coloured acrylic jewellery, domestic ceramics, fine Silver and Gold Jewellery and beautifully hand woven silk scarves all displayed in a new and stunning bespoke retail space. Including both local and national craftspeople we aim to showcase a diverse and individual range of work from both established and newly emerging makers. 8. COMMISSION SPECIFICATION FOR 1 MILLBANK LIBRARY, HOUSE OF LORDS

The House of Lords Works of Art Committee seeks to commission a practitioner working in the areas of fine art and sculpture, design or craft to undertake residency in Parliament and produce a site specific piece of work which will enter the permanent Works of Art collection of the House of Lords.
The House of Lords is currently refurbishing No.1 Millbank to provide office accommodation, meeting rooms and information services for the working Peers. One of the most important areas is the new Library which will provide traditional and digital resources and services to Peers and staff.
The main House of Lords library in the Palace of Westminster, designed by Charles Barry and AWN Pugin, provides one of the most important and well used working interiors of the Palace. The approach to 1 Millbank, whilst being significantly more economically constrained than the mPalace, has nevertheless emphasised the need for good design to provide a practical working environment which is attractive and of sufficient quality to stand the test of time as the Palace library has done.
To facilitate the development of the work the practitioner will undertake a residency in the main Palace library this autumn (2010). The residency will offer:
An opportunity to become familiar with the holdings of main Palace Library including many historic printed books and bindings as well as a large collection of paper publications and extensive digital resources.
An insight into the working practices and activities of the library users and staff. It is hoped that the residency will encourage engagement with library users and staff both to inform the practitioner but also to allow Peers and staff to understand, and possibly collaborate with, the processes involved in the development and production of the final 'work'.
Access to the design team and designs for No 1 Millbank to enable the practitioner to produce a work which will relate to the interior of the new library and will be suitable for siting in an area with few wall surfaces and much built-in furniture.
A desk space for 2-3 days a week throughout the 6-8 week residency period (dates to be confirmed with successful applicant).

The resultant work will:
Relate directly to the work of Parliament and draw on the information discovered during the residency.
Draw on the main Palace Library as a source of inspiration in terms of the relationship between design and function.
Provide continuity with the main Palace library in terms of materials/techniques which include:
Wood
Leather
Textiles
Paper and printed text
Bookbinding
Metalwork (brass)
Painted surfaces
Artists books
Be of sufficient quality and durability to enter the Works of Art Collection.
Be site specific and fit within the approved designs for the Millbank library.
Adhere to the refurbishment programme which is progressing now and will complete in summer 2011 with occupancy in September 2011.

The Works of Art Committee is particularly interested in receiving proposals from practitioners working in traditional methods, but whose approach reflects a modern response to, and use of, these methods. The Committee would welcome proposals that combine traditional and digital methods of production and presentation, reflecting the resources the Library holds and provides, however the finished work should be a tangible object rather than a digital/virtual object.
To apply:
Applicants must be resident in the UK.
Applicants are asked to submit:
a proposal, no longer than two sides of A4, outlining how they would approach the residency and resultant final work.
a CV including examples of previous residencies and/or commissioned work
a selection of images of your work printed on to no more than 2 sides of A3
The name and contact details of 2 referees, at least one of whom can comment from firsthand experience on the applicants professional practice.
Their own contact details including email address.

We regret we will not be able to return application materials.
In applying applicants must confirm that they are available to undertake a residency of 6-8 weeks, attending the House of Lords for 2-3 days a week. The residency will start between 25 October and 8 November and must be completed by 17 December 2010. Final details will be agreed with the appointed practitioner.
A fixed fee is offered of £10,000 inclusive, no additional expenses for travel, accommodation etc will be paid for the commission and resultant work. For this fee the practitioner will be required to undertake the residency during Autumn 2010 and the produce a work suitable for acquisition into the Collection and display in the Millbank library by July 2011. Consideration will be given to any proposal where the cost of materials for the final work is particularly high and therefore falls outside the spirit of the fee. Applicants should clearly state in their proposal if this is likely to be necessary and, if possible, give an indication of the sum necessary.
APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY 12 NOON ON MONDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER 2010 and should be sent to:
Melanie Unwin
Curators Office
Houses of Parliament
London SW1A 0AA
and clearly marked Millbank Library in the top lefthand corner of the envelope.
Email submissions can be accepted but must not be larger than 1MB in size and should be sent to curator@parliament.uk . Submissions received after 12 noon will be discounted
