11TH LESSEDRA WORLD ART PRINT ANNUAL - MINI PRINT 2012

1. CREATIVE CAFÉ
Throughout February we will be trialling a project which we are calling Creative Cafe, which as the name says is a Café for Creatives!
Every Tuesday in February (7th, 14th, 21st and 28th) we will open our doors from 10.30am to 12.30pm and play host to all creatives in the area. We have Wi-Fi if you want to come and work away with others around you plus we will be offering bottomless mugs for £1 for you to fill with as much coffee and tea as you like (and we might even throw in a few biscuits) and it will give you the opportunity to mingle with other like-minded folk.
The WYPW team are working on hands on demonstrations to take place during the sessions - more info will follow.
So put these dates in your diary, if we have a good response we plan to develop this idea and introduce further talks and demonstrations

2. CURRENT EXHIBITION: GOING FOR GOLD
by the Contemporary Textile Art Group (TAG)
The Gallery at West Yorkshire Print Workshop is proud to announce our new exhibition ‘Going for Gold’ which opens on Tuesday 31st January and runs until Monday 13th February.
‘Going for Gold’ is the theme of exciting new work created by the contemporary Textile Art Group (TAG).
The exhibition explores aspects of gold which have little to do with competing for medals. Members of TAG, which was founded in 1994 to promote textiles as an art form, have interpreted “Going for Gold” in diverse ways, from studying highly artificial Art Nouveau jewelled insects and the techniques used in creating Moorcroft pottery to gold in the natural world: leaves, hay meadows, honeybees. True gold and fools’ gold, alchemical gold and the end-of-the-rainbow gold have all inspired pieces in this exhibition. Conventional and experimental methods of creating work echo another aspect of the theme of going for gold: aspiring to a “gold standard” of originality and quality.

3. ADULT COURSES: Plus Special Announcement!
Re-scheduled Etching course PLUS special announcement
LEARN TO PRINT!
We have pushed back the start date of our `First Steps in Etching’ evening class. It will now start on Monday 5th March, so you've still got time to book yourself, (or someone else), a place!
You can book online in a few easy steps here.
First Steps in Etching - Kathryn Desforges
This course will teach you all the basics of hard ground, soft ground, and open-bite etching to enable you to create a wide variety of marks and effects. You will experiment with etching onto copper, zinc and aluminium plates using ferric chloride and copper sulphate solutions, both less-toxic alternatives to traditional nitric acid.
The course is led with a hands-on approach from the start, and there is the opportunity to produce a good number of prints to take away with you. You will also learn about paper, inking and registration techniques. This is a great course for beginners and those who need a refresher, and can act as a lead-in to membership of WYPW so that you can continue to use and develop the techniques you have learnt.
Kate Desforges is a practising artist who specialises in printmaking, and is also technician at WYPW. You can find out more about her here.
5 Monday evenings, starting 5th March 2012
6.30 - 9pm
£110 (£99 for WYPW members)
And our special announcement…
Demonstration: Norman Ackroyd RA
We are very excited to welcome Norman Ackroyd RA to WYPW in April, for a demonstration of how he uses etching to create his magnificent landscape prints. He will be revealing the secrets of sugarlift, showing you how to make your own aquatint box, along with many other essential hints and tips along the way, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions.
Norman Ackroyd was elected a Royal Academician in 1991, and awarded a C.B.E. for services to engraving in 2007. He hails from West Yorkshire and studied at Leeds College of Art from 1956 - 1961. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to see a real expert at work.
Saturday 14th April 2012, 11am – 1.30pm.
£40 (£36 for WYPW members)
Only 20 places available, so book early to avoid disappointment.
Book online here.

4. CHILDREN’S WORKSHOPS (INC FEBRUARY’S FREE WORKSHOPS!)
February half-term will see more of our FREE workshops for both 8-12 year olds and 13-19 year olds taking place in our gallery here at WYPW:
Screen Printed “Action Posters”
Monday 13th February, 10am - 4pm (8-12 year olds)
Morning:looking at action posters for film and theatre we will discuss ideas for creating an action poster, imagery heroes or themselves. We will look at the main central images but also look at fonts and decorative borders, we have access to the internet and computers for fonts and imagery to help the participant but we will encourage using drawing skills as well as collage.
During lunch the silk screens will be processed but they will need to dry before we start printing.
Afternoon:The children will work in pairs to support each other in the printing, one will hold the screen print and align the paper while the other screen prints and places their art work on the drying rack, and vice versa. We will experiment with the screen inks to pull through to create experimental and dramatic backgrounds. While these are drying we will work a variety of coloured paper to produce a run and then work onto the experimental background.
Friday 17th February, 10am - 4pm (13-19 year olds)
Morning:looking at fanzines and comics as inspiration we will then work with an eight box format to illustrate a full story or treat each individual box differently. The participant will use drawing collage and painting to realise their imagery, by lunch time the art skills will be completed.
During lunch the silk screens will be processed.
Afternoon:at the start of the afternoon session we will create different coloured background to the fanzine using blocking out colour with simple stencils and varying pulling colour through the silk screen, this will give a wide variety of bases to print the fanzine onto. The screens will be ready and while the above work dries, we will work on a selection of coloured paper to produce a run of the fanzine, again mixing the colour pull through as desired, then finishing experimenting with the earlier backgrounds created.
This is an excellent opportunity to learn the techniques and processes of screen printing for FREE!
Each participant should be able to produce a minimum of 20 screen prints during these sessions.
To book onto these workshops please email us on workshops@wypw.orgor call 01924 497646 during office open hours. For full day workshops (10-4), participants will need to bring a packed lunch with them.

5. A NOTE TO VISITORS: Heating Problems
Unfortunately our temperamental boiler has decided to completely give up on us and, as such, it is now a little chilly here at WYPW. We have numerous heaters chugging away in the print rooms and the gallery to try and keep the temperature up a bit but, if you're planning on coming to visit us, just make sure you wrap up warm!

7. THIS MONTH IN THE OFFICE
The office staff had to unleash all their creativity and money-saving nous to celebrate much-loved administrator Karen's (undisclosed) birthday last week. Reduced in price chocolate sponge cakes were expertly teamed with buy-one-get-one-free Cadbury's Fingers and cut-price party candles to create a masterpiece of cakery that had many a jaw agape with awe.
Needless to say fun was had by all and everyone is looking forward to the next special occasion to see just what creative masterpiece we can conjure up.

B. BISCUIT FACTORY NEEDS OLD PRINTMAKING STUFF
The Biscuit Factory, the UK's largest independent commercial gallery, studios and cultural hub is expanding our collection of hand-made prints in the gallery, becoming the largest representative of Printmakers and their work in the North East. To stage this section of the gallery and to illuminate the processes behind printmaking, we are asking printmakers to donate old or no longer used printmaking tools such as blocks and plates, with the hope that amongst you, we may even be able to source an old printing press itself, to create a real centrepiece for the collection. If you have anything that you feel would complement our printmaking collection or indeed may have an old press tucked away at the back of your studio please contact gallery manager rachel@thebiscuitfactory.com. We have a short window for preparations so please do get in touch as soon as you can to support our project. Many, many thanks for your support in advance.
If you would like to submit your prints for consideration for display within the new print area, please contact sam@thebiscuitfactory.com.
