Artist Talk: Alison Edmonds
As part of our series of events celebrating 35 years of WYPW, we welcome Huddersfield artist Alison Edmonds for an informal artist talk. Alison is based at Bates Mill studios in Huddersfield, and was a studio holder at WYPW when it first opened in 1984. She produces oil paintings, generally large scale, drawings, sculpture and occasional installations. She was brought up in Manchester and Huddersfield and studied for her degree in Fine Art at Psalter Lane, Sheffield. Her work draws inspiration from the urban and natural landscapes around her and is constantly concerned with ideas of change, repetition, rebuilding and restructuring.
“I left a studio in Wapping Wall London and moved back to Huddersfield hoping to meet like- minded people and to develop Art opportunities . Following a series of meetings at Huddersfield Art Gallery where the development of a centre for studio spaces was discussed a centre was finally deci. After a lot of hard work by people other than myself Eastthorpe gallery was established and we looked forwards to opportunities and studio facilities for Artists working in the area.
I had a small studio in the basement at Eastthorpe Gallery, as it was then, and it was a great place. I made lifetime friendships, and artistic opportunities were opened up for me. I still visit exhibitions there and take part in print workshops.”
This informal event forms part of our 35 year celebrations, and runs alongside our summer exhibition which showcases work by artists who have been involved with WYPW throughout the years. Refreshments provided.
