Artist Talk: Jo Gorner

As part of our series of events celebrating 35 years of WYPW, we welcome Jo Gorner for an informal artist talk. Jo is an experienced and established printmaker. She completed her first degree at the Ruskin School of Fine Art, Oxford University, where she was taught printmaking by Jean Lodge, who studied with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17, Paris, and who was inspirational in her rigorous approach and experimentation. She went on to complete an MA in print at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Printmaking is central to her practice, although it does not dominate the narrative or dictate the expression of it. The relief and etching techniques she uses allow space and time to consider an image, facilitating the passage from thought to paper. The quality of the marks she achieves, the presence of the hand and incidence of chance, are all integral to her work.

“The restorative value of the creative process and the impact of the natural landscape both underpin my practice. The artwork which results is a sensory, embodied, response to this immersion in the natural world, a relational encounter with a landscape.”

This event forms part of our 35 year celebrations, and runs alongside our summer exhibition which showcases work by artists who have been involved with WYPW throughout the years. Refreshments provided.
