How can we use colour to make an impact, to express a mood and/or make a statement in our print work? How do you use colour? Are you intuitive or do you feel you struggle to make decisions about your use of colour? Have you really thought about your approach to colour recently? Maybe it’s time to have a play and explore the wonderful world of colour mixing using simple hand cut stencil screen prints.
Starting with basic colour theory, we will analyse how other printmakers have used colour and look at how you can use reference to develop your colour mixing, using system 3 inks and textile medium. You will then develop screen printed colour square designs to explore over-printing and the possibilities of producing 7 colours from 3 colours on paper or fabric.
Previous experience of screen printing is useful but not essential for this course, and beginners can be accommodated, along with those who need a refresher. The course is perfect for those who already use screen printing in their work and would like to develop their use of colour.
Clare Grace is a surface pattern/printed textile designer and printmaker based at WYPW. She has taught colour at art colleges and has also run professional development sessions in colour for Tigerprint (Division of Hallmark PLC). Designing fashion and furnishing fabrics requires a good understanding of colour – producing many colour ways for one design, and having to work with colour trends is challenging and exciting.
All course prices include basic materials such as inks, paper, tools and equipment. Other materials and printmaking papers will be available to buy during the course if you would like to try something a bit different, or take some materials home to try out.

Cancellations and refunds
If you cancel your booking more than three weeks prior to the course start date, you will be eligible for a refund, minus a 5% admin fee. (Admin fee does not apply for Printmaker’s Toolkit Sessions).
We regret that we cannot offer refunds for cancellations made less than three weeks before the course start date. At this point we have already started making preparations including ordering materials and equipment, and it is less likely that we will be able to fill your place.
We cannot give refunds for failed attendance due to sickness or external circumstances.
If you would like to transfer to another course, we can do this free of charge providing you let us know three weeks prior to the course start date.
Bookings cannot be transferred with less than three week’s notice, however in the event that you are unable to attend on the day, bookings can be transferred to another person. In this case please inform us as far in advance as possible so that we can update the booking.
