Etching – Taster Session
Come and get your hands inky and your creativity flowing in a friendly, artistic environment! This session will introduce you to the technique of etching, an ‘intaglio’ printmaking process, where lines and tones are ‘bitten’ into a metal plate. (This is traditionally done using an acid, however we use a solution of copper sulphate – a less toxic alternative). A print is then taken from ink which is held within the bitten marks on the etching plate using an etching press. Learners will be guided through the process of plate making, inking and printing in the traditional intaglio way, and produce 2-3 prints each on good quality paper to take home.
Our taster sessions are an ideal gift for the creative person in your life, or why not attend with a friend for a mid-week creative boost? They offer a brief introduction to some of the key printmaking techniques practiced here at WYPW, and a glimpse into the processes involved in creating hand-made prints. You will be guided and encouraged by experienced artists who use printmaking in their own art practice, in a professionally equipped workshop setting.
Some printmaking techniques are quite process-heavy, and as such, some preparation is done for you on these sessions, so that you can concentrate on image-making. We hope you will come away inspired and eager to learn more, and our longer day and weekend courses offer the opportunity to learn particular techniques in more depth.
Taster sessions are designed for people who have little or no prior knowledge or experience of printmaking, but are also great for those who want to a refresher of a particular technique.
Neil Anderson worked in the commercial printing industry for over 25 years, and believes in learning the basics thoroughly, then applying those in any way that fits with your personality and artistic ambitions. “There are no rules, printmaking is fundamentally the transferring of ink from one surface to another – you can be very precise, or equally treat it in a very loose and free way. The main thing is that you learn, have fun and enjoy discovering the huge potential of printmaking.”
All course prices include basic materials such as inks, paper, tools and equipment. Other materials and printmaking papers will be available to buy during the course if you would like to try something a bit different, or take some materials home to try out.
After attending a taster session in monoprint, drypoint or linocut, you will be able to join WYPW as a member to continue to practice the skills you have learned. Screen printing and etching are processes which involve a bit more practice, so we would advise that learners attend a further course in these techniques before joining us as a member. Sign up for membership within one month of attending the course you will receive a £5 discount. Find out more about membership here: http://www.wypw.org/shop/standard-membership/
