Japanese Woodblock Printing (Mokuhanga): Summer School
Spend an immersive four days learning the traditional Japanese art of water-based woodblock printing! ‘Mokuhanga’ is perfect for artists interested in a non-toxic, table-top printmaking technique. Over the course of the weekend you will learn the basic skills to transfer and carve a ‘key line’ and colour separation blocks, in the tradition of Japanese Ukiyo-e printmaking. With no press required, only a hand held baren, you will learn techniques to achieve various print effects, from ‘sesame printing’ to ‘bokashi’ (gradation), while registering your multi-block image through the simple traditional ‘kento’ system. You will be sure to fall in love with both the process and results of this accessible, water-based printmaking method which provides endless possibilities.
Some previous printmaking experience is helpful but not essential.
Lucy May Schofield learned Japanese printmaking and paper making techniques while living in Japan for 2 years. Lucy has taught nationally for almost 10 years and is an internationally renowned book artist with work in many collections. She has recently returned from an advanced course at the Mokuhanga Innovation Laboratory, Kawaguchiko, Japan.
All course prices include basic materials such as inks, paper, tools and equipment. Other materials and printmaking papers will be available to buy during the course if you would like to try something a bit different, or take some materials home to try out.
As this technique can be done easily at home with some basic materials, you may not need to come in to use the workshops, however there are other benefits of WYPW membership, including 10% courses and exhibition opportunities. Find out more about the benefits of membership here: http://www.wypw.org/shop/standard-membership/
We also stock a range of Japanese washi papers and we are able to order in specialist papers and materials, such as plywood blocks, barens, etc. You may also find that you would like to use this technique in combination with other printmaking techniques, which we can advise on and facilitate.
