We are delighted to welcome back artist Lucy May Schofield to WYPW to teach this follow-on course for those familiar with Japanese water-based woodblock printing, or ‘Mokuhanga’. This course is intended for those who want to develop their skills in this particular technique and will focus primarily on the printing, rather than the carving, of blocks. Learners are encouraged to bring their own carved blocks with them to work with and will be guided and refreshed on various techniques including paper damping, inking and printing effects, including ‘bokashi’, (gradation), techniques, with the aim of getting better quality and more consistent prints from your blocks. There will be lots of opportunity to take advantage of Lucy’s wealth of knowledge of this process, and iron out any issues you may have been while practicing at home.

Experience level

Some previous experience of water-based woodblock printing is necessary for this course.

Your tutor

Lucy May Schofield learned Japanese printmaking and paper making techniques while recently living in Japan for 2 years. Lucy has taught nationally for almost 10 years and is an internationally renowned book artist with work in many collections. She has recently returned from a Printmaking residency in California.

What’s included?

All course prices include basic materials such as inks, paper, tools and equipment. Other materials and printmaking papers will be available to buy during the course if you would like to try something a bit different, or take some materials home to try out.

What’s Next?

As this technique can be done easily at home with some basic materials, you may not need to come in to use the workshops. However we do stock Japanese Kozo paper and we are able to order in specialist papers and materials, such as plywood blocks, barens, etc. You may also find that you would like to use this technique in combination with other printmaking techniques, which we can advise on and facilitate. Sign up for membership within one month of attending the course you will receive a £5 discount. Find out more about membership here:
