This short day workshop will give you a taster of ‘Mokuhanga’ printmaking – the Japanese method of water-based woodblock printing. This technique was used by artists in Japan in the Edo period to make prints in the Ukiyo-e style, such as Hokusai’s famous ‘Great Wave’, and is still used by contemporary artists all over the world today. In this hands-on session you will be guided through carving a wood block using specialist tools, and printing your block by hand with watercolour paints. Learners will create a simple one or two colour image, and experiment with colour layering and inking techniques such as ‘bokashi’ (gradation).
Mokuhanga is a fantastic medium for artists to use to make prints, as it can be done at home on a tabletop, and does not require heavy printing presses and equipment. On the surface, woodblock printing can seem like a fairly straightforward process, but as with all printmaking techniques there are many subtle nuances and intricacies which can only be mastered with practice. The aim of this day session is to give learners an idea of the possibilities of Mokuhanga as a medium to create images, and to have fun and get inky.
Taster sessions are designed for people who have little or no prior knowledge or experience of printmaking, and are also great for those who want to a refresher of a particular technique.
