Spend a day learning photo-plate lithography in our specially equipped workshops. Photo-plate lithography can produce prints with remarkable subtle tonal detail. It can be used a process by itself, or combined with other printmaking techniques, and is a quicker alternative to traditional stone lithography, (for those of you whose time is limited and want speedier results).
This course will have an experimental approach to image-making, with an emphasis on generating images by hand through drawing, painting and mark-making onto transparent film. (Although you can bring photographic imagery to work with as well if you wish). Images will then be transferred onto light-sensitive lithographic plates by exposing them to UV light, and the plates are then developed, and printed on our etching press. Participants can expect to produce 2 – 3 plates during the day, making multiple prints of each to take home, and printing in colour if time permits.
The aim of this course is to show participants how to use the photo-litho process to create original, hand-made prints, as supposed to exact reproductions of existing images.
Kate Desforges is an artist and printmaker based in Leeds. She makes, exhibits and sells limited edition, handmade original contemporary prints and artist books. In 2013 she completed a year long post graduate lithography internship at Leicester Print Workshop, and she is also Studio Co-ordinator and Technician here at WYPW.
No previous experience is needed for this course. Beginners are welcome, along with those who need a refresher. This is also a great course for those with an established printmaking practice who want to introduce new techniques into their work.
All course prices include basic materials such as inks, paper, tools and equipment. Other materials and printmaking papers will be available to buy during the course if you would like to try something a bit different, or take some materials home to try out.
After attending this course you will be well equipped to join our workshop as a member and continue to use our facilities to make and develop your own work. The sooner the better, as the longer you leave it the more you are likely to forget! If you join up within one month of attending the course you will receive a £5 discount.
