For our December PTK session we are delighted to welcome printmaker, WYPW member and 2017 Flourish Award shortlisted artist Clare Phelan. Clare uses found objects of coding technologies to create collagraphs and etching which reference an industrial past. In this informal talk/demo session Clare will talk about the evolution of her work, and demonstrate some of the processes she uses to create her prints.

Having completing a Visual Arts MA (distinction) from Bradford College in 2013, Clare now works from her printmaking studio in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. During 2017 she was awarded the ‘People’s Choice’ Intaglio Printmaker’s prize at the Flourish Award for Excellence in Printmaking, and was also a recipient of the ‘Art&’ RAW Talent Award, for emerging artists.

‘I work with nineteenth and twentieth century artefacts, such as textile jacquards, pianola rolls, musical box discs, and IBM punch cards. I often print directly with these discs and cards – using the metal polyphon discs as etching plates, the jacquards as stencils, and the IBM cards as collagraph plates.’

Clare is interested in the idea of a ‘lag’ effect in terms of human understanding and advancing technology. Socio-cultural evolution is much slower than technological change, and its easy to feel fear and frustration, a sense of being left behind, as our lives become increasingly mediated through machines.

These 1 hour morning sessions focus on technique, practice and making, and comprise of practical demonstrations and talks led by practicing artists and printmakers. The sessions are intended to encourage, inspire, and generate ideas and conversation about printmaking, so don’t be afraid to ask questions! Both members and non-members are welcome to attend. If you are not a member, or indeed a printmaker, they can act as taster sessions to show you what printmaking is all about. If you are a member or practicing printmaker, the sessions can offer valuable hints and tips to help further your printmaking practice, or introduce you to a new technique.
