Description

Come and get your hands inky and your creativity flowing in a friendly, artistic environment! This session will introduce you to the technique of screen printing, where ink is pushed through a frame covered in a fine mesh, (the ‘screen’), onto a surface underneath, using a ‘squeegee’. Learners will be guided through the process of creating layered colour prints, using simple hand-cut paper stencils which block or ‘mask’ out areas of the screen.

Our new taster sessions offer an introduction to some of the key printmaking techniques offered and practiced here at WYPW, and a glimpse into the processes involved in creating hand-made prints. You will be guided and encouraged by experienced artists who use printmaking in their own art practice, in a professionally equipped workshop setting.

Experience level

Taster sessions are designed for people who have little or no prior knowledge or experience of printmaking, but are also great for those who want to a refresher of a particular technique.

Your tutor

Neil Anderson worked in the commercial printing industry for over 25 years, and believes in learning the basics thoroughly, then applying those in any way that fits with your personality and artistic ambitions. “There are no rules, printmaking is fundamentally the transferring of ink from one surface to another – you can be very precise, or equally treat it in a very loose and free way. The main thing is that you learn, have fun and enjoy discovering the huge potential of printmaking.”

What’s included?

All course prices include basic materials such as inks, paper, tools and equipment. Other materials and printmaking papers will be available to buy during the course if you would like to try something a bit different, or take some materials home to try out.

What next?

After attending a taster session in monoprint, drypoint or linocut, you will be able to join WYPW as a member to continue to practice the skills you have learned. Screen printing and etching are processes which involve a bit more practice, so we would advise that learners attend a further course in these techniques before joining us as a member.

Small print

All course prices include basic materials such as ink and cartridge paper. We also stock a range of good quality printmaking papers including Somerset, Fabriano, Zerkall and Hanhnemuhle, which can be purchased as extra. Tea, coffee and biscuits are also provided.

If you need to cancel your place on a course and you give at least 10 working days notice, you will be offered a credit note, valid for one year, which can be used in payment towards another course. Unfortunately we are unable to offer any refunds if the period of notice given is less than 10 working days. West Yorkshire Print Workshop reserves the right to cancel courses. If this happens, full refunds will be given.
