Textile Printing & Hand-Made Marks
This course will focus on textile printing using hand drawn imagery. Learners will develop their images into print through drawing and mark-making onto transparent film using a variety of media and techniques, generating designs which are then translated onto screens to make a stencil using the photo-emulsion process. Images will then be printed onto fabric using pigment paste, producing a washable 2 or 3 colour screen-printed piece of fabric, suitable for making into a cushion cover, bag etc. The course will also include tuition on design, colour mixing, colour separation, registration and overprinting with transparent colour – with clever over-printing or screen blocking more colours can be gained.
This course would suit workshop participants with experience in the visual arts but not necessarily screen printing experience.
Clare Grace is a surface pattern/printed textile designer and printmaker. She works from her studio space at West Yorkshire Print Workshop, Mirfield, where she makes colourful, painterly screen prints by using hand drawn Kodatraces to produce photographic stencils. Currently she finds her designs being influenced by folk art, historical satirical art and Staffordshire Pottery. She is interested in how print and especially textile printing has been used to promote social consciousness, and her work often makes subtle comments on class and the current political climate.
Clare has taught colour at art colleges and has also run professional development sessions in colour for Tigerprint (Division of Hallmark PLC). Designing fashion and furnishing fabrics requires a good understanding of colour – producing many colour ways for one design, and having to work with colour trends is challenging and exciting.
2 pieces of heavy weight cotton fabric to print onto are included in the course fee. Extra pieces may be purchased if required at a cost of £5.00. All other basic materials such as inks, paper, tools and equipment are provided. Other materials and printmaking papers will be available to buy during the course if you would like to try something a bit different or take some materials home to try out.
